about
The song is about a friend of mine who grew up in Clearwater, Florida, and all the weird culty shit they were put through as a kid before they escaped to Portland to be the fiercely non-binary tattoo artist they were always destined to be. They told me their life story on the one date we ever went on, and it stuck in my head long after until this song came to me. It’s about survival, acceptance, and platonic love, anyone who knows them would know this song is about them. That made me real happy, I hope it makes you happy too.
lyrics
Clearwater, everything comes at a cost
And they saw ya, thought you were getting lost
But you found yourself in a shotgun
Found yourself in New Mexico where they sent ya
And you nearly died
Thank god you survived
(Ooh, ahh)
Thank god you survived
(Ooh)
I'm glad you're alive
Clearwater could never hold you down
You ran off at 18 as soon as you had the chance
Your father collected vintage guitars
He never gave you what you needed at all
Your body is covered in pencil marks
You're an artist, a canvas, you've got it all
Thank god you survived
(Ooh)
I'm glad you're alive
Thank god you survived
(Ooh)
I wanna hear more
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah

So delighted that Angel is finding that "hard won acceptance" that she sought and hope that her future path is one of authenticity. This work is one marked by melodious but not overwrought emotion, striking an intuitive balance of warmth and skill. hailhumanists
